Favourite Things About Christmas
‘It’s the most wonderful time of the year’
Since I’ve been banging on so much lately about how much I love Christmas, I thought it was about time I shared what I love the most about Christmas – what my favourite things are. It’s quite a scrambled up post but here goes anyway.
We’ll kick it off with music because it’s definitely high up on the list of my favourite things. There’s nothing more exciting than waiting until the 1st of December to play your favourite Christmas songs, even though most of the shops ruin that experience early on in November by playing them all already..
My favourite song has got to be The Pogues, Fairytale Of New York, no idea why but it get’s me extremely exciting and it’s the first song I play every year on December 1st. A close second is Wizard, I Wish It Could Be Christmas Everyday because I just get this burst of excitement whenever this is on, followed by Shakin’ Stevens, Snow Is Falling. Ever since John Lewis released their Christmas Ad with the Lily Allen version of Somewhere Only We Know, I’ve become obsessed with it, and I also really love the Gabrielle Aplin version of The Power Of Love. Tbh though, if it was possible, I’d list every single Christmas song here because I just love them all and I could keep going forever.
Next up, I’ll share my favourite Christmas films, which are all very obvious because I think we all love the same.. My all time favourite is Nightmare Before Christmas because every year since I was little, mum would put it on for me on Christmas Eve and as soon as it was done it was time for bed, so I’ve kept up that tradition and it happens every year. I’m still like a child at Christmas, waking everyone up at 5 in the morning getting forced to go back to bed because I went to bed way too early because I was excited… I also love Miracle On 34th Street and It’s a Wonderful Life for kind of the same reasons – we would always watch these Christmas Eve. And I can’t write this post without including Elf and Grinch can I – the ultimate Christmas films.
For food, we always have the traditional Dinner with a prawn salad or soup starter, a big ol’ chicken dinner (none of us really enjoy turkey..) & home made trifle or gateau for dessert. Then when we all settle in the room we pull out the gingerbread biscuits, celebrations and rice crispy buns that were made the night before.
Every Christmas after we’ve had our amazing dinner we gather in the living room to play games. One of the funniest games that we played last year was ‘Guess That Song’ – Where someone plays 5-10 seconds of a song and whoevers turn it is has to guess who sings it & what it’s called. We played with Christmas songs last year, and I won! but we all got a bit carried away and we were all way too competitive so it was hilarious (there’s 11 of us) We also love a good ol’ game of trivial pursuit and monopoly.
Now on to the more random things that I love about Christmas.
Christmas jumpers – I literally wear them all December, if I’m not in my work uniform or pyjamas, I’m in a christmas jumper.
The Christmas Decorations – Since we have Christmas round at ours and all the kids come (which is my excuse..) I go crazy for the decorations. 4 Christmas trees in total, not even counting the little ones, tinsel hung everywhere I can possibly hang it and fairy lights everywhere you turn. People think I’m crackers – pun intended.
Wrapping presents – I go all out when I’m wrapping presents, There’s usually a Christmas film on the background, I’ll have my Christmas playlist on & I’ll be sat in Christmas clothes from head to toe. It’s so exciting!
And of course, the fact all the family has come together, and we’re all sharing gifts. I absolutely love finding the perfect gifts for everyone and I get more excited to give them there’s than to open mine!
