You might have seen me mention the Maybelline Superstay Matte Ink quite a lot in the past few weeks, and that’s because I still can’t make my mind up on it. I was debating with myself for a little while as to whether I should even bother writing this post at all, since I don’t even have a proper opinion on it, but I thought I’d let you all know anyway, plus I want to know what you think too. I’ve been trying it out since Christmas now, and I still have mixed feelings, so keep on reading to find out why.
As always, let’s start with the packaging, which is very clearly, very pretty. I will admit that it was the packaging that caught my eye in the shop, I am a complete sucker for anything pastel, especailly makeup packaging. It’s really simple, not that much about it, but it’s pretty. It’s in a square tube, you can’t really see the colour because in my opinion, the lipstick isn’t the same colour as the packaging, but it is a light pink, so it’s not too bad. It clicks shut too, which like I always say, is a massive plus for me. The applicator is a little different though, it reminds me of a lipgloss I used to own, can’t remember which one though.. I like it, it’s nice and spongey so it’s easy to apply and it’s quite precise with it’s pointed tip.
The colour – Loyalist – is obviously my absolute favourite thing about this lipstick, if you know me, you know I love a pink/nude lipstick. The swatch does make it look a little darker than it is, and a little orange, and that’s probably because I’m so pale, but it’s a gorgeous pale pink with a warm nude tone to it, reminds me a little of the L’Oreal Lip Paint in Off White but a tiny bit darker.
The product however is what I’m confused about. First impressions in the shop were amazing, it didn’t dry down too quickly and it didn’t seem sticky either, second impressions, when I first tried it were good too, it didn’t seem to dry to much so it felt nice and smooth and it looked good. But the next time I tried it, my mind completely changed, I don’t know whether I just wasn’t paying proper attention the first time I tried it because I was so in love with the colour or what, but this time I really didn’t like it.
It applied absolutely fine, and it looked nice, but it wouldn’t settle down properly, it was sticky and uncomfortable and when I ate, it all started to come away, so I attempted to reapply, which didn’t work, it all clumped up and just looked awful. So I tried to get it off, and that was the worst part to be honest, it just wouldn’t budge. I think if I could easily remove it to reapply it, I’d be able to cope a lot better with it. Don’t get me wrong, I love liquid lipsticks, but since trying ones that don’t fully dry (like the avon ones), I can no longer enjoy the ones that do. I didn’t let this put me off though, the colour is just too nice for that, so I’ve been trying to make it work ever since.
I didn’t know whether it was me, whether it was because I was applying maybe too much, or because my lips were a bit dry, but it’s been more than a month since I first tried it and it’s still the same. The conclusion to this is, I still don’t know whether I like it. I wear it, when I know I won’t be out all day, or going for a meal and such, because I like it but I shouldn’t have to limit myself to be honest, it’s just not good enough and I am so disappointed. I think there’ll be a lot of people out there with the same feelings as me, and a lot that love it, or completely hate it. But one thing I will say, is if you can’t deal with slightly sticky lipstick, don’t bother trying it. It’s a complicated one, especially when there are so many beautiful colours in the range that I want to try too!
